Mileage: approximately 80 miles
Time: approximately 2 hours
Ride description: Leave the crowds behind on this hidden beauty, some say it’s better than “Dragons Tail” in Tennessee. This ride has nice turns and twists, but not as tight as some others in the Black Hills allowing the opportunity to catch some of the amazing views. This ride also takes you to the western side of Rapid City, then along Sheridan Lake Road and also into historic Deadwood.
Directions: From Sturgis take Vanocker Canyon road, from Deadwood take 385 south, from Rapid City take Sheridan Lake Road and from Hill City take 385 north.
Best thing about this ride: The beauty and scenery of Spearfish Canyon without the large crowds. This ride also brings you by beautiful Sheridan Lake, which is a reservoir that is actually built over Sheridan and the first county seat of Pennington County. Deadwood is along the way, but save some time to enjoy this roomy and vast ride as it’s not typically very crowded.
What else to look out for: Chapel in the Hills, Steamboat Rock and Box Elder Creek.
